The Manchaug Mills Logo
The logo for Manchaug Mills presented numerous challenges in bringing it forward from an existing file that was available only as a raster image, and which also needed updating. Because the logo did not exist as a scalable vector image as is necessary for modern applications, we determined to create a fresh, enhanced version of the core illustration for this transition. The new illustration depicting the mill building is at the heart of the new logo and in a style that preserves the woodcut look and feel in keeping with the historic nature of the building and its locale.
To achieve the transformation we approached the Sutton Historical Society which has in their collection the original auction catalog printed by Butterfield Printing Company — produced when the Mill was auctioned in 1922 by the J.E. Conant Co. The catalog included the original illustration of Mill Building No. 1, which depicts today’s Manchaug Mills. With the very kind loan to us of this distinguished artifact by the Sutton Historical Society, a high resolution scan was made of the printed image.
After numerous iterations of retouch and enhancement, a vectorized version of the core image of the Mill building illustration was created and paired with brand-consistent typesetting of the mill name and the addition of the date of establishment of the mill, to commemorate the mill’s 200th anniversary: 1826 – 2026.
